Report: Liverpool still not out of race to sign 'blistering' £67m player and it could depend on Darwin Nunez

Liverpool have a chance to add to their squad this month as the January transfer window is now open.
The Reds have been in stunning form under Arne Slot and have a squad that is capable of competing on all fronts, but that’s not to say they have no scope for improvement.
Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been linked with a move to Anfield, but the Georgian international seems to be on his way to PSG.
Similarly, Omar Marmoush has keen admirers at Liverpool, but the Egyptian is in talks to sign for Manchester City.
And now, if reports are to be believed, the Reds are still in the running to sign the Bundesliga striker.
Liverpool could make late bid to sign Omar Marmoush
Marmoush has been one of the most in-form players in world football this season and has already notched up 19 goals and 12 assists across all competitions for Frankfurt.
Omar Marmoush stats | Apps | Goals | Assists | Mins played |
Bundesliga | 16 | 14 | 8 | 1.365′ |
Europa League | 6 | 4 | 2 | 408′ |
DFB-Pokal | 3 | 1 | 2 | 207′ |
Liverpool’s interest in the Egyptian is well documented, but in recent weeks, Manchester City have stolen a march on him and have made their move to sign him.
However, according to Florian Plettenberg, Frankfurt are standing firm on their £67m valuation of the player and will not sell him unless their asking price is met.
Pep Guardiola’s side are very much in the driving seat to secure his signature, but Caught Offside believe a late move from Liverpool can’t be ruled out as Darwin Nunez faces an uncertain future at Anfield.
The Uruguayan has scored just four goals this season and is running out of time to save his Liverpool career, having failed to live up to his hype since his big-money move from Benfica in the summer of 2022.
Nunez has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and it remains to be seen if he secures a transfer in January.
The report states that Liverpool’s interest in Marmoush is tied to Nunez’s future, due to which a move for the Egyptian can’t be ruled out at this stage.
Frankfurt boss Dino Topmoller described Marmoush as a player with ‘blistering’ pace and if Liverpool make a move for him, he’d complement their current crop of attackers quite well by the looks of it.
Lots happening at Liverpool currently
Nunez faces an uncertain future at Liverpool and the Reds are still in the hunt for Kvaratskhelia, so there’s a lot happening at Anfield behind the scenes currently.
Marmoush is clearly a fantastic player and his current form suggests he’d definitely be an upgrade on Nunez, who has fluffed his lines in front of goal this season.
However, Man City have done a lot of groundwork to get a deal done and are likely to snap him up as Liverpool’s interest depends on the Uruguayan’s future.
Never say never in football, but we can’t see this one happening at this stage of the transfer window.
