Liverpool look set to fend off interest in some of their star players during the January transfer window.

The Reds may be flying on the pitch but they have gotten themselves into a real pickle off it, with three huge contract issues yet to be resolved.

As of Wednesday, all three of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah can openly speak to non-British clubs about end of season moves.

In the case of Alexander-Arnold, things got a whole lot more urgent for Liverpool on Tuesday.

Real Madrid made a surprise approach to the Reds in an attempt to bring a summer move for the right-back forward to January.

But after Liverpool rejected any suggestion of Trent leaving mid-season, it seems that the Spanish giants are not going away.

Liverpool expect Real Madrid talks for Trent Alexander-Arnold

Real Madrid are clearly very interested indeed in the idea of bringing Alexander-Arnold to the Santiago Bernabeu.

And whatever Trent’s pointed celebration against West Ham meant, it looks like the Scouser is keen to take them up on that offer.

Nevertheless, it has been claimed that Alexander-Arnold is not interested in a January exit and so all parties may have to be patient for the time being.

In the meantime, the Liverpool ECHO have claimed that the Reds are far from being out of the woods regarding their No.66.

Although Liverpool reportedly have ‘no interest in discussing the matter further’ with Real about a January move, they can do nothing about Alexander-Arnold speaking to his prospective new employers.

And that is something the Reds are said to think will definitely happen. It’s claimed that Liverpool are fully expecting Madrid to ‘take the opportunity’ to talk to Trent about a potential summer arrival in Spain.

Liverpool should accept Alexander-Arnold defeat

Plenty will be said and written about Alexander-Arnold following Madrid’s attempt to sign him in January.

From a Liverpool point of view, none of that should be good. The Scouser looks all set to turn his back on his boyhood club.

While the Liverpool owners should certainly take a portion of the blame for letting that happen, the buck should ultimately stop with Trent himself.

It’s fairly clear by now that Alexander-Arnold is enamoured by the idea of joining the self styled ‘biggest club in the world.’

As a result, Liverpool should do the best thing for themselves and focus on bringing in his replacement. The sooner that happens, the better, as whether this get rumber-stamped this month or in the summer, Trent’s head is no longer in Liverpool.
