Liverpool struggled as Salah's shooting boots shone on Sunday
Mohamed Salah had a mixed day at the office against Southampton, as did most of his teammates. The Egyptian's stat line would make you forget about any struggles, however, with Salah scoring two and unlikely to not have bagged four.
Arne Slot mentioned Salah's importance to the club in his post-match press conference:
"We always know we can trust on him if things are difficult for us. After we went 2-1 down I didn't really feel that was the moment we should score in. Then out of a fantastic pass from Ryan Gravenberch though [we did].
"But the timing of the run and the way Mo finished it was special and that helped us really back into the game, of course. It's normal if you score at 2-2 it helps you back in the game but we needed that goal maybe to play the last 25 minutes that we played because then for me it was a matter of time before we scored a goal.
"In the first hour we dominated possession without really creating that much. In the last half-hour we were dominating – or the last 25 minutes – with creating some chances."
The Liverpool head coach is impressed not only with Salah's output in challenging moments, but with his intelligence at work rate, and his ability to create something out of nothing.
After the match Salah's own comments piost-match moved the conversation away from his goal scoring threat and toward his contract negotiations, though equally the milestone of his brace is hard to ignore: Salah has now scored 100 goals for Liverpool away from home, scoring against 38 different clubs (including 24 English teams).
The Egyptian is only the third player to reach this milestone, following in the footsteps of Roger Hunt and Ian Rush.
Reds fans will be delighted to learn that the ground that hosted the largest amount of Salah's away goals is Old Trafford, where Salah has put 10 past rivals Manchester United while at Liverpool.
