The future of Trent Alexander-Arnold remains up in the air at Liverpool.

The right-back is out of contract at Anfield at the end of the season and there have been no concrete signs of a new deal being agreed with the 26-year-old.

The player’s situation at the Merseyside club has resulted in Real Madrid heavily pursuing Alexander-Arnold and the feeling amongst fans is that the full-back will leave the Reds ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Should this happen, Arne Slot will need a replacement and Liverpool have their eye on several potential targets.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong has been linked to Liverpool and it seems Slot has been in contact with the Dutch talent over an Anfield switch.

Arne Slot has been calling Jeremie Frimpong about Liverpool move

A move for Frimpong would cost Liverpool £33m this summer as that is the release clause in the Leverkusen star’s current contract. The Dutch star is expected to leave the German champions at the end of the season, with England and Spain believed to be the options for his next destination.

According to BILD’s Christian Falk, Slot has been in contact with Frimpong a lot over the last month as the Liverpool boss keeps the defender updated on a potential move to Anfield to replace Alexander-Arnold.

"Jeremie Frimpong and Arne Slot were on the phone a lot last month. Both are Dutch, and Slot wanted to sign him in the summer," Falk wrote in his Fact Files column for the Daily Briefing. “The Liverpool head coach had been telling the full-back he was still keen to get him.

“However, he's very upfront and honest, so Frimpong is aware that, at the moment, a striker and a defender are the main targets for Liverpool who aren't going to get any fees in for Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah or Trent Alexander-Arnold should all three leave at the end of their contracts this summer.

"So, he knows that he's No.3 on the to-do list for Arne Slot, but if the club can manage to sign both a striker and a defender – he will be the next target. His release clause is nearly €40m, so it's a lot of money!"

Frimpong is clearly a player Slot likes and the Dutch coach would have been impressed with what he saw his fellow countryman do in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday night.

Jeremie Frimpong’s impressive assist vs Spain

The Netherlands played out a 2-2 draw with Spain during the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final tie on Thursday.

Liverpool fans would have been delighted to see Cody Gakpo netting the Dutch side’s first goal and equally impressed with what Frimpong did for the second with the 24-year-old being linked to the Merseyside club.

The defender produced an assist often seen from Alexander-Arnold as the Leverkusen star ran down the wing before having the composure to cut the ball back to Tijjani Reijnders in a packed Spain box.

Liverpool will find it impossible to replace a player with the quality of Alexander-Arnold should he depart for Spain this summer.

However, Frimpong may be the next best thing, as Slot could do a lot with the attacking talent of the 24-year-old defender.
