'Unable': National media deliver unimpressed verdict on Alexis Mac Allister after Argentina lose to Paraguay

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister was named in the starting XI for Argentina as they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Paraguay in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Lautaro Martinez broke the deadlock for the reigning world champions, but the hosts struck back through Antonio Sanabria and Omar Alderete either side of half-time to cap off a famous victory.
It wasn’t a good day in the office for Lionel Scaloni’s side, but judging by what’s been said by the Argentine media, Mac Allister, in particular, didn’t cover himself in too much glory.
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister struggles vs Paraguay
Starting in midfield alongside Rodrigo de Paul and Enzo Fernandez, Mac Allister was actually given a bit of license to roam.
While the latter was one of the best players in the first half – providing the assist for Martinez’s goal, De Paul was his usual self in midfield as he fought tooth and nail for the team.
The Liverpool midfielder, on the other hand, was largely anonymous and couldn’t impose himself on the game.
TyC Sport rated his performance 5/10, although they did cut him some slack by adding that his lacklustre performance wasn’t completely his fault as Argentina struggled as a unit.
They wrote: “The least positional of the midfielders, he moved all over the pitch. The ball came to him little and he was unable to influence the game, but it was not his fault.”
Mac Allister’s stats vs Paraguay
Mac Allister has enjoyed playing under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot and has been in fine form this season.
However, he struggled against Paraguay and his underlying numbers show exactly why that was the case.
- 64 minutes played
- 10/13 passes completed (77% pass accuracy)
- 2/4 duels won
- 0 crosses, long balls or key passes completed
The Liverpool midfielder was given a Sofascore rating of 6.4, making him the lowest-rated player on the pitch.
