Manchester United fan Usain Bolt reckons they showed enough in the draw at Liverpool on Sunday to convince him they can still win the Premier League.
Liverpool were expected to sweep aside the Red Devils at Anfield as they went into the game in fine form while Ruben Amorim’s side were struggling badly.
However, things did not go as many expected, with United taking the lead through Lisandro Martinez, then falling behind before Amad Diallo rescued a point, with the game ending 2-2.
It was an encouraging performance after a string of bad ones, especially against a side that is top of both the Premier League and Champions League tables.
The legendary sprinter was certainly impressed, making a bold prediction for the Red Devils if they can keep up that level.
‘If we can play with this fight every game @ManUtd will win the league,’ Bolt posted on X.
The Jamaican has long been a Manchester United fan, explaining in the past that it was Ruud van Nistelrooy who first attracted him.
‘Ruud was the one who made me start supporting Manchester United. Just watching him play, a striker at the level he was, playing for United,’ said Bolt.
‘It was like “this guy is one of the best”, you know what I mean, and, for me, he is why I started watching Manchester United. I never turned back and I’ve just seen great players after great players coming to United and doing a great job.’
Bolt’s judgement on United has not always been bang on, though, as illustrated by a conversation he had with then manager Erik ten Hag in 2023.
‘The first thing I said to him was thank you. I was like, “Thank you,” and I shook his hand,’ said Bolt at the time. ‘And he was like, “Thank you for what?” I was like, “Bringing the glory days back.”
‘For the past couple of years it's been a tough ask for the players and the team, and there's been ups and downs. So the fact that now we can see us stabilising out and going forward and going up – it's brilliant. All I was trying to say was just thank you, I appreciate him, and just to continue what he's doing.’
Amorim did agree with Bolt on the fight his side showed at Anfield, though, although reminded them that this is a requirement for every game not just against their old rivals.
‘I want to see my team play so much better but I think the most important thing to address today is the mentality, that is the key for everything,’ he said.
‘Today we were a different team not because of the system and not because of a technical aspect of the game. We faced the competition in the way we are supposed to face every day. Training and match, it doesn't matter, we need to face every day like that.’
