Speaking on Stick to Football, Neville named Liverpool’s 2008/09 squad as the best the former defender ever faced from the Reds, a side that famously came close to winning the Premier League title under Benitez.
A squad that had the likes of Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso all in their prime, the fact Liverpool failed to win a single trophy during this small era of their modern history is a testament to how great the likes of United were also in this period.
And for Neville, the 08/09 Liverpool squad was the best he ever faced from the Merseyside giants, with the Reds having world-class talent in virtually every position of the pitch, including on the bench.
Neville said: “The best team that I ever played against that were Liverpool was the one with Gerrard, Torres, Alonso, Mascherano, you and Hyypia. Reina was in net. I felt they were getting very close, particularly with a midfield of Gerrard, Mascherano and Alonso.”
