Liverpool kick off their 2024-25 League Cup campaign when West Ham visit Anfield on Wednesday evening.

The League Cup may be England's second cup competition and as such the first place managers of top clubs look to rest, rotate, and save the legs of their stars when the fixtures start to pile up.

At the end of the day, though, silverware is silverware and athletes want to win. It might feel like a bit of a chore at the start, but getting to a final and winning a trophy feels good, and many of these Liverpool players have experienced some very good moments in the League Cup.

"Some of my best memories at Liverpool have been made in the League Cup," noted club captain Virgil van Dijk ahead of Wednesday's kickoff against West Ham to start the 2024-25 edition for the Reds.

"Including, of course, that epic win over Chelsea at Wembley back in February. And we are all keen to continue the club's proud tradition in the competition. We know that tonight will be a tough game.

"West Ham may have had a few disappointing results, including against Chelsea at the weekend, but there's no way we will be taking them lightly. We have had enough close games against them in the past to not do that. They will be coming with a point to prove, and we have to be ready."

West Ham have struggled under new manager Julen Lopetegui, with just one win—a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace—and four points to show for their opening five Premier League games.

The 14th-place Hammers entered the League Cup ahead of Liverpool in the second round and beat Bournemouth 1-0 to earn their date at Anfield tonight. They were defeated 3-0 by Chelsea on the weekend that saw them thoroughly outplayed.
