Liverpool took on Southampton this afternoon in a huge Premier League club for the Reds.

The Anfield side headed into the clash at St. Mary’s with the chance to go eight points clear of Manchester City, who on Saturday suffered one of their most surprising results in recent Premier League memory with a 4-0 loss against Tottenham

With Pep Guardiola stating that Liverpool will be Premier League favourites if they beat City next weekend, a win against Southampton could go a long way in Arne Slot winning the title in his first year in charge at Anfield.

Yet on the south coast, Jamie Carragher was not impressed by one moment from a Liverpool player.

Ibrahima Konate criticised after ‘stupid’ foul on Adam Armstrong

Speaking on Sky Sports coverage of the match, the former Liverpool defender was critical of a tackle Ibrahima Koante made on Adam Armstrong in the opening half, with the French centre-back almost conceding a penalty.

With Konate staying fit for most of the season with Liverpool, the £35m defender is enjoying his best year yet with the Anfield side, with the former RB Leipzig man finally forming a solid partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

But Carragher was not pleased with Konate’s reckless challenge on Armstrong, with the pundit saying: "It's a stupid thing to do from Konate, the defending wasn't great initially as he comes across. But he looks like he's just outside [the box]."

Carragher later added: “I don’t think Konate is right on it mentally. He needs to sharpen up, he’s been involved in two or three things now, he’s already one a yellow card as well. He’s been outstanding for Liverpool this season but right now he doesn’t’ have the intensity needed for this game. “

Konate knew he got away with one against Southampton

With Andy Robertson being the one to concede a contentious penalty in the opening half, Konate knew he got away with one in his own tackle on Armstrong in the opening half.

The 25-year-old has been outstanding this season, with Slot taking Konate to the next level alongside Van Dijk in a defensive system that has worked wonders for the majority of the campaign.

Yet against Southampton, there were cracks in Konate’s game, and the defender will know that he could have done better against the Saints in what was a below-average performance for the France international.
