Liverpool booked their place in the semifinals of the Carabao Cup as they secured a 2-0 win against Southampton at St Mary’s.
The Reds have edged closer to defending their crown and produced a clinical display away from home in what turned out to be a routine win.
Goals from Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott got the job done for Arne Slot, who opted to name a much-changed starting XI as he finally rotated his squad.
Nunez got his name on the scoresheet but was on the receiving end of a cruel dig from the Southampton faithful.

Starting in attack alongside Cody Gakpo and Elliott, Nunez once again produced a spirited showing and was rewarded for his efforts.
The Uruguayan broke the deadlock as he took advantage of a brilliant pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold to slot the ball past Alex McCarthy, who unfortunately slipped while positioning himself to save the shot.
Before the goal, though, Southampton fans appeared to mock his dry run in front of goal, referring to him as a ‘____ Andy Carroll.’
The chant was heard right before Nunez got his name on the scoresheet but he had the last laugh as he set off to celebrate his goal for Liverpool.
Nunez’s stats for Liverpool this season
The enigmatic striker wears his heart on his sleeve and gives it his all whenever he takes to the pitch, but his end product hasn’t been good enough so far.
Jamie Carragher feels Liverpool must offload Nunez in 2025 as he hasn’t delivered the goods consistently since joining the club from Benfica in 2022.
Liverpool have been liked with a move for Joao Pedro and the Brazilian international is predominantly a number nine, so the coming months might well decide whether they stick or twist with Nunez.
