Liverpool could have a number of players back from international duty early this week.

The Reds initially saw 16 first-team players head off to join up with their national teams during the pause in club football.

That number was added to when Curtis Jones was made a late addition to Lee Carlsey’s England squad to face Greece and Finland.

It was a second call-up for the Liverpool midfielder, but as he awaits his Three Lions debut, Jones has now been hit with another setback. He’ll have to wait a little longer for that elusive first cap.

Having remained unused during England’s shock defeat against Greece, it might have been expected that the Liverpool academy graduate would play some part in Sunday’s game in Finland.

However, it has now been revealed that Jones will not travel with the rest of the squad for the Nations League clash.

Curtis Jones made to wait for England debut

The international break can often lead to players picking up fitness problems while away with their countires.

Luckily for Liverpool, they now look set to avoid that scenario in the case of three important players.

It has already been confirmed that Virgil van Dijk will return to Liverpool after being sent off for the Netherlands against Hungary on Friday.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah has been told he can cut short his time with Egypt over fears that the pitch in Mauritania could lead to the 32-year-old picking up an injury.

And now, according to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth, Jones is set to make it a hat-trick of Liverpool players taking no further part in the international break.

“Curtis Jones will not be travelling to Finland,” Sheth reports from St George’s Park on Satruday.

“He’ll remain in England for a ‘personal committment’ is what it’s being described as by the Football Association.”

Is Curtis Jones injured?

Upon hearing the news that Jones has withdrawn from the England squad, most supporters will have instantly assumed that the 23-year-old is injured.

Having gotten himself back fit and started his first Premier League game of the season last weekend, it would be typical that the notoriously injury-prone midfielder had picked up another knock.

However, that does not appear to be the case here. The reason for Jones staying behind may become clear over time, or it may not.

In the meantime, Liverpool themselves have confirmed that the Scouser will not be playing for England, reporting on liverpoolfc.com that Jones has left the camp due to a ‘personal matter.’

With Jones’ girlfriend Saffie Khan currently pregnant, hopefully there is due to be some good news on the way for Curtis.
