Liverpool are finally back in Premier League action on Sunday as they begin another daunting run of fixtures.

The Reds navigated some very awkward matches before the latest international break, emerging five points clear at the top of the league.

The entirety of that seven-game schedule between the October and November pauses was completed without first choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Alisson has returned to training following another frustrating time with injury for Liverpool.

In his absence, Caoimhin Kelleher showed up in a big way, proving why the Reds were so keen to hang onto him over the summer.

Nevertheless, when Alisson is ready, he will displace Kelleher once again. And journalist David Lynch has explained whether that could come as soon as Sunday’s trip to Southampton.

Liverpool set to make Alisson decision

Despite the brilliance of Kelleher, it is testament to how good Alisson is that there shouldn’t be any arguments about him stepping straight back in.

The 32-year-old is still arguably the best ‘keeper on the planet and Liverpool will be better for having him to call upon once more.

And speaking to Anfield Agenda on Wednesday, Lynch claimed that it would not be a surprise to see Alisson return at St Mary’s.

“I think he [Alisson] should be in contention for Southampton,” says the reporter. “Again, because it’s a muscle injury, they will be on the side of caution with that.

“So, if there’s any slight doubt they’ll just give him that extra game off, let Kelleher come in and play. But if they’re absolutely happy with where they’ve got him, there’s every chance we see him just thrown into the starting line up.”

Lynch also says it ‘would not be a surprise’ to see the return of Harvey Elliott to the Liverpool squad on Sunday.

“I would not be shocked at all to see Alisson in the starting line-up at Southampton and Harvey Elliott in the squad,” he predicts.

What about Diogo Jota?

While it’s superb news that we could see Alisson and Elliott back in business on Sunday, they are not the only players Liverpool fans will be wanting back.

Diogo Jota has not been seen since going off injured against Chelsea on October the 20th.

Over a month on, and the forward is still missing. Arne Slot previously claimed that Jota will be back after the international break, but that it could be a week or two beyond the restart.

Perhaps Slot will provide another update during his press conference on Friday. But, for the time being, we are still playing a waiting game.

As for any other business, Federico Chiesa was spotted at the Liverpool training ground on Tuesday, but it seems as though the Italian is not yet ready to return either.

Still, great news about Elliott and – especially – Alisson.
