'Agreement in principle' to sign Manchester United player – Cockiness perhaps going overboard

The Italian media are perhaps getting a little too excited over Napoli potentially signing Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United in the January widow.

That excitement is leading to over-optimism and perhaps a little cockiness verging on delusion. Calciomercato bring a good example of that, going with a headline which states Napoli have an ‘agreement in principle’ to sign the Manchester United player.

It’s once again reported Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna travelled to Barcelona to meet Garnacho’s entourage this week. They claim the player’s camp ‘immediately made it known’ that he’s tempted by a move to the Serie A club.

Il Mattino claim there’s an ‘agreement in principle’ between the parties which consists of a five year contract at €3m per season. That figure is almost certainly after tax, and is less than the €4m it’s reported was requested, but the €3m would increase gradually over the course of the contract.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is said to have made it known he won’t go beyond €50m for Garnacho, and Manchester United are said to be wanting €70m.

Therefore, all the claims of agreement are useless, as is the confidence from some Italian quarters.
