'Another hopeless half': Lacklustre Utd man who 'somehow' retained starting spot was invisible yet again vs Saints

Manchester United are trailing 1-0 to the team sat rock bottom of the Premier League with around half an hour to play at Old Trafford.

After spirited showings at Anfield and the Emirates in back-to-back away trips, the Reds are back to their lacklustre selves on their home turf this evening.

United were penned back into their own half for the majority of the first 45 minutes, with the Saints breaking the deadlock only two minutes prior to the interval through a Manuel Ugarte own-goal.

Shortly after half-time, in the 53rd minute, Ruben Amorim withdrew both Rasmus Hojlund and Manuel Ugarte from the action to be replaced by Joshua Zirkzee and Toby Collyer, respectively.

Despite retaining his starting role for a fourth successive Premier League game, Hojlund has offered nothing in attack yet again.

"Even for the worst United side in 50 years (and they are, despite the past two performances), that half is a new low," Samuel Luckhurst said on X/Twitter before Amorim's changes. "Southampton deservedly ahead. Hojlund, somehow starting, has had another hopeless half."

Hojlund's invisible performances continue to frustrate supporters

While the No.9 is still only 21 years old, fans can't be blamed for demanding more from a £64 million signing who was acquired to lead the line week in, week out – and finally put an end to the side's goalscoring woes.

Yet, Hojlund has scored only twice in his 16 league appearances this campaign; he last found the back of the net in early December during United's 3-2 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest and frequently struggles to get into the positions his attacking counterparts expect him to be in during matches.

His lack of clinicality is undoubtedly proving to be a red flag for Amorim, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him drop to the bench for Sunday's visit of Brighton and Hove Albion.
