It is not often that you see a club sign a club sign a 19-year-old and insert a Ballon d’Or clause into this contract. That is how highly Man Utd rated French Golden Boy Anthony Martial when they signed him back in 2015.

317 games for the club later, it is safe to say that the former Monaco player has reached nowhere near the heights envisioned for him early on in his career. The 28-year-old left Old Trafford upon the expiry of his contract.

Transfer – £380,000 a year player ready to agree Manchester United move

He was without a club until AEK Athens snapped him up recently. The player has taken a huge wage cut to head to Greece.

At Man Utd, Anthony Martial was last reported to be earning around £250,000 a week despite hardly playing any football.

He has now taken a £200,000 a week pay cut to join Athens, where he will be earning around just £50,000 a week. Following his inability to stay fit in the last few seasons, it comes as no surprise that he has had to take a massive wage cut.

Martial scored 90 goals and provided 47 assists wearing a Red Devils jersey. Capable of playing off the left, from the right and even through the centre, the Frenchman still has the ability to lead a line as long as he stays fit.

In his later years at Manchester United, he transitioned into a more central role. He was hardly seen playing on the wings and it remains to be seen what kind of role the Frenchman gets to play at AEK Athens.

At 28, Martial still has time to turn it around in his career. He doesn’t have long left before he enters his latter years as a professional footballer. Only time will tell how things turn out and let’s see how it pans out.
