Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted there are "red lines" he's set for players, hinting Marcus Rashford has crossed them.

The Portuguese manager has been speaking to journalist Fred Caldeira about the situation at Manchester United, which inevitably meant a conversation about Rashford.

He's been linked with a move away from Manchester United throughout this month, with both parties seemingly prepared to go their separate ways.

That's seen him named as a target for clubs across Europe but so far, the main players, such as Barcelona and AC Milan, have not moved for him or not been able to square the finances of a deal.

That's left Rashford in an awkward position at Old Trafford as he's failed to impress Amorim, failing to make the squad in seven of their last eight games in the league. His one appearance saw him sitting on the bench for the defeat to Newcastle United.

Amorim has appeared to be publicly criticising the forward in recent weeks, but Amorim insists that he is not using him to send a message.

"I don’t want to give messages to anyone," he said when specifically asked about Rashford and potential messages via that situation to the whole squad.

"I’m just very clear about what the players have to do. I’m demanding in certain things, but then I’m a coach like everyone else. There are just certain red lines that I feel that, for a group to win games and titles, you have to follow a criteria.

"And so, if there’s no such criteria, then it’s all very subjective. And there are certain things that we have to be very clear with the players. That’s just it. I don’t want to send messages to anyone."

Another player who has been missing under Amorim so far is Casemiro, who does not appear to be in the club's long-term plans.

The Brazilian has also been out of Amorim's squads over the past few months, dropping out of the team for four games after the 4-0 win over Everton at the beginning of December.

He returned for defeats against Wolves and Newcastle United but has not been seen throughout January so far. Amorim again insists this is not a personal matter, but a case of the best fit for his future vision.

"Sometimes it’s a lot of that. It’s also a player’s moment," he added.

"We understand that Casemiro has other things nowadays. The intelligence he has, understanding the game, understanding where the ball is going to fall but we’re in a league that I can see, even in European competitions, the difference in intensity is big.

"And so, I feel that this team also needs players with a very high intensity. And sometimes we don’t have that and sometimes that difference in characteristic can lead one player or another to play.

"Even the fact that the group has a certain characteristic as a group. I needed some players in certain positions with a slightly different pace. But we all know the quality Casemiro has and everything he won. And so, I have nothing to say about that. It’s just a choice."
