Manchester City have reportedly made a breakthrough in their talks to sign Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush.
After an unprecedented loss in form across the Premier League and the Champions League, the English champions have been spurred into transfer action this month. An injury to Rodri has left the Sky Blues short of options in midfield, and they are expected to strengthen in that position before the transfer window slams shut. In addition, they are also hunting reinforcements up front to solve their goalscoring issues.
According to a report from Sky Sports, Man City have reached an agreement in principle with Omar Marmoush. The player is keen on moving to England, and the Cityzens now have to strike a deal with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Marmoush, 25, has set the Bundesliga on fire this season, netting 13 goals and supplying eight assists in 15 games. With 30 goal contributions in 24 games across all competitions, the Egypt international has the second-best record in Europe's top-five leagues behind his compatriot and Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah.
Omar Marmoush to Man City—Can he turn around their fortunes?
Man City sold Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid in the summer and didn't replace him, leaving Erling Haaland as the only proper No.9 in Pep Guardiola's squad.
Erling Haaland has established himself as one of the most fearsome strikers in Europe in recent years, and perhaps Guardiola would have felt that the Norwegian would single-handedly be able to carry the goalscoring burden for his team. However, his decision to not fill the void left by Alvarez has come back to haunt City, with Haaland not firing all cylinders so far this season.
As a result, City are now trying to address their lack of firepower by adding Marmoush to the squad. The Egyptian forward has caught the attention of several European clubs including City with his hot goalscoring form for Frankfurt. He has netted 13 goals in 15 games in the Bundesliga—only behind Bayern Munich's Harry Kane.
The Egyptian's ability to play anywhere across the front line makes him the perfect fit in Guardiola's system. He will bring goals, assists, creativity, pace and dynamism, as well as much-needed cover and competition for Haaland, whose productivity has dipped a bit this term.
Marmoush is in scintillating form and could City's cause by making an immediate impact. At 25, the Cairo-born talent is at the right age to be making the step up from the Bundesliga to the Premier League. The forward is actively pushing for the move having agreed terms with the Sky Blues, fully aware that he is Guardiola's top target in January.
Should City manage to agree a fee with Frankfurt and land Marmoush before the transfer deadline, it could signal the beginning of their second-half renaissance.
