Rangers have lost a lot of money over the last few seasons with players leaving the club and no money coming in the opposite direction.

During the 2024 transfer window, five players left for just £800,000 in what should be the last time Ibrox is raided for a pittance.

One player who left Rangers for free was Alfredo Morelos, who has never been far from the headlines after discovering that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Alfredo Morelos finds form in post Rangers resurgence

Morelos has just fired Atletico Nacional to a league and cup double in Colombia to finish off a loan move from Santos.

With 11 goals and two assists in 28 appearances, the 28-year old has finally rediscovered the scoring touch that left him in his final months as a Rangers player.

Not that this means Santos will welcome him back with open arms, according to Brazilian journalist Fabiano Farah:

"The club’s lawyers are just waiting for approval from the Peixe Management Committee, chaired by Marcelo Teixeira, to move forward with the termination of the contract. The payroll relief would be more than R$8 million," claimed Farah via R7.

"Alfredo Morelos has always been a burden on the club’s coffers. He didn’t deliver on the field. He resisted reducing his salary to compete in the Brazilian Championship’s Série B and when he did reduce it to R$350,000 per month, he charged a bonus of R$20,000 per goal scored."

Could Clement get a tune out of Morelos?

Morelos' road traffic collision and arrest for drink driving has been the spark for Santos to consider cancelling the striker's contract which could see him looking for a new club for the third time since leaving Rangers.

El Bufalo has been open about his desire to return to Europe which begs the question, would the current manager be able to get a tune out of the powerhouse forward?

Using Data MB's comparison model, the answer is yes.

Morelos is a more rounded player than Cyriel Dessers in that he links play better, gets on the ball more and gives opposition defenders a hard time.

There has been interest in Dessers from France and getting a high earner who is sitting on the bench off the wage bill would free up resources for Clement to sign another striker.

Rangers fans dreaming of a blockbuster return for Morelos shouldn't get their hopes up though because Morelos has neither the mobility nor fitness that the current boss demands from his No.9.

One thing can be guaranteed though, wherever Morelos does go, the fireworks will never be far behind, especially with Pedro Caixinha about to be his new boss at Santos.
