'Outrageously poor': Billy Dodds highlights 'scandalous' Rangers problem as Kris Boyd labels it 'a disgrace'

As Rangers fell even further adrift of runaway Premiership leaders Celtic during Thursday’s oh-so predictable 1-1 draw at Dundee, the numbers certainly don’t make for particularly impressive reading as far as Philippe Clement is concerned.
Doubts are growing about the Rangers manager’s future.
And the nature of that performance at Dens Park – The Gers falling behind after just six minutes and barely threatening a winner aside from Mohamed Diomande’s crossbar-rattling rocket – Philippe Clement has now tasted victory in just three of 11 Premiership matches away from home across 2024/25.
Rangers have lost more away games than they’ve won. They have picked up just 13 points on their travels too, fewer than Dundee United.
And with the gap between those in blue and their green-clad Glasgow neighbours now standing at 15 points – it could have been 16 too with Clinton Nsiala fortunate to avoid a penalty concession – Billy Dodds is not the only one running out of patience.
Philippe Clement slammed as Rangers’ away woes continue at Dundee
“Rangers’ away record is scandalous,” Dodds, scorer of 34 goals across three seasons at Ibrox between 1999 and 2002, tells BBC Sport. “It’s outrageously poor.”
Rory Loy, who represented both the Gers and Dundee in his own playing career, was left wondering how many more matches like this Clement can realistically expect to survive.
“The decision is now does Clement stay or go?,” Loy asks. “Fifteen points behind Celtic, how bad does it get? Does it get to 20, 25?
“I just think some big decisions are going to have to be made.”
While Vaclav Cerny did rescue a point – Rangers most potent marskman in the Premiership this season equalising in the first-half – a comeback victory at Dens Park never felt particularly likely.
Something Clement, in a typically tense post-match discussion, puts down to a lack of quality and poor decision making in the final third.
“Not enough clear chances. In our last pass, we were not good enough today,” Clement sighs. “We didn’t show enough to make the difference. We were not decisive enough. We had enough moments to be there, but we didn’t make enough of the right choices.
“It’s normal [that the fans are] unhappy. I’m also unhappy we didn’t take the three points. I know I’m the face of the team, it’s part of my job.”
Kris Boyd savages Rangers ‘disgrace’ as Clement hangs on
Excuses are wearing thin for Kris Boyd.
After a year and a half in the dugout, the five-time Premiership Golden Boot winner is right to expect more at this stage of the Clement tenure.
“You talk about injuries, Dundee have injuries. Rangers should wipe the floor with Dundee,” Boyd fumes. “Thirteen points out of 33 [away from home] is a disgrace. You can talk about progress, [but] there’s none.
“You absolutely destroyed Celtic a week ago, and you’re struggling for confidence? There was no confidence struggles going into the Celtic game. It can’t just be a one off.
“It’s an absolute disgrace Rangers are in this position. It’s done. It’s over to [chief executive] Patrick Stewart now. This can’t continue.”
Rangers are still seven points ahead of Dundee United and Aberdeen in third and fourth place respectively. Yet, once again, the Gers are stuck in that no man’s land; enough quality to be the ‘best of the rest’, but still miles off challenging Celtic for the title.
