Rangers top assist kings of 2024 sees new creativity approach

There has been a recurring problem under Philippe Clement during his tenure as Rangers boss – mistakes at both ends of the park.
If it isn’t the defence throwing in goals or Jack Butland having a wobble, it is the forward line missing chances and increasing the pressure on those at the back.
The squad still needs a lot of work, but there are signs that Rangers first choice XI is starting to look more dangerous, when the manager doesn’t rotate that is.
Rangers Top Assist Makers 2024
Here are the top playmakers for 2024 out of the players who are still at the club.
What sticks out immediately is that there is a lot coming down Rangers right-hand side.
Vaclav Cerny and James Tavernier top the list with six for 2024/25 and all of them are from open play, given that Rangers have forgotten how to score from set-pieces.
The skipper leads the way purely because of his extra games from the 2023/24 season.
Jefte needs to find consistency with his final ball but has shown a willingness to get beyond his winger and get to the byline.
What he also needs is for his attacking teammates to improve their finishing.
Over the course of the season, playing either on the wings or in the No.10 position, Ianis Hagi and Nedim Bajrami should be looking to get into double figures.
With Tavernier not exactly succeeding from dead ball situations, both should also get the chance to prove that they are more than capable to contribute from free-kicks and corners.
Name | Assists |
James Tavernier | 10 |
Cyriel Dessers | 6 |
Vaclav Cerny | 6 |
Ross McCausland | 6 |
Mohamed Diomande | 5 |
Rabbi Matondo | 5 |
Nedim Bajrami | 4 |
Ianis Hagi | 3 |
Tom Lawrence | 3 |
Hamza Igamane | 2 |
Danilo | 2 |
Connor Barron | 2 |
Jefte | 2 |
Nicolas Raskin | 2 |
Things can only get better?
What is encouraging is Rabbi Matondo’s three assists from just 250 minutes in 2024/25.
After making his first appearance since September against Motherwell, it is clear that he still has some way to go in terms of match fitness, however, Rangers have missed his pace and ability to cause chaos – even it he doesn’t know what he is going to do next himself sometimes.
Unlike in the past when Tavernier and Borna Barisic used to dominate this sort of list, Rangers do have a spread throughout the squad.
That augurs well for the future with both Matondo and Oscar Cortes back playing and available for selection too as a lack of depth and options played a major part in losing the league title last season.
