Rangers have been suspiciously quiet this January as the transfer window trundles into its second week.

Philippe Clement has once again shifted the responsibility onto Patrick Stewart as Rangers' tight purse-strings show no signs of loosening.

Nils Koppen and co are searching far and wide for bargains who can strike it rich at Ibrox in terms of silverware and in future transfer fees.

And according to the latest reports, Rangers' net has been spotted as far away as Russia as the club look to a UEFA loophole that could see them land a Serbian international for free.

Rangers 'ask' about Sasa Zdjelar

Rangers are reportedly considering a move for 29-year-old CSKA Moscow midfielder Sasa Zdjelar as they look to bolster their backline.

The versatile defensive midfielder can also play at centre-back and Rangers have been on the hunt for an experienced midfield campaigner since the summer window.

The Daily Mail have broke the story in the UK, citing reports in Russia, with Sasa Zdjelar also interesting clubs in Germany.

Having started his career with OFK Beograd in Serbia, the midfielder has also played for Olympiakos in Greece and spent some time on loan at Mallorca in Spain.

Spending four years with Serbian giants Partizan Belgrade before moving to CSKA in 2022, it's claimed that Rangers have 'asked about Zdjelar's availability'.

The 6ft Serbian international has nine caps for his country and even captained Partizan between 2020 and 2022.

UEFA rules could see free Rangers transfer

Sasa Zdjelar is two and a half years into a four year deal with CSKA Moscow said to worth £15k per week or £780k per year after tax.

Whilst it remains unclear if Rangers would have to pay a transfer fee to sign the midfielder, it's claimed the Ibrox club could strike a deal for the player on a free.

That's because a UEFA loophole allows for players contracted in Russia to rip up their deals and suspend their contracts due to the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

At the same time, the report references exit links surrounding Cyriel Dessers, who has been linked with Serie A side Cagliari and Ligue 1 Saint Etienne this winter.

It's claimed Rangers could consider selling the striker to 'raise funds' with Sasa Zdjelar one of a number of targets linked to Ibrox.
