Southampton currently find themselves bottom of the Premier League, getting used to the harsh realities of the competition following their promotion from the Championship.

They’re already five points from safety and are going to need something rather drastic to happen in the coming months if they’re to successfully pull away from the danger zone and stay in England’s top flight.

January arrivals could be key to that for the Saints, and they’re set to welcome Welington from São Paulo. At the beginning of July we covered claims from Brazil that the left-back had agreed terms to join Southampton, which he would do so as a free agent when his contract came to an end.

That contract expires at the end of December, so the 23-year-old will be on his way to England in the not so distant future.

In the summer, there had been suggestions that perhaps Southampton could leave him where he is for a while after that cut off point, perhaps agreeing a loan deal, but that doesn’t look to be possible now.

Goal Brasil report São Paulo are trying to locate a replacement.

Signing Marlon from Cruzeiro is presented as one option, although it’s FC Porto’s Wendell who is the priority.

All hope of keeping Welington for longer appears to have gone, and Southampton will be hoping he can make an immediate difference.
