Stoke City caretaker boss Ryan Shawcross has said his time in interim charge is a ‘chance’ to show what he can do.

Stoke City have turned to the 37-year-old as they hunt for a permanent replacement for Narcis Pelach.

Shawcross guided the Potters to a 1-0 win at home to Sunderland on Sunday afternoon after Tom Cannon’s late winner.

Speaking after the match, he shared this update on his situation, as per a report by StokeOnTrentLive: “It’s a difficult question to answer because I’m not in charge of the decision making but what I can say is that John Coates and Jon Walters have given me this amazing opportunity for a game, maybe two, and it’s a chance for me to show what I’m about. I think you’ve seen that today. In the future, this is the club I feel is my club. One day it might happen, it might not, but whoever gets the job is going to have a fan base that will get right behind them.”

He added: “I’m prepping for it (Burnley trip). You never know in football. I didn’t know I was going to be taking this until the day before and you never know what’s going to happen. I’m prepping and if I get the chance to take it, I’ll take it.”

Stoke City need to ensure that they get this next appointment right.

Pelach’s spell didn’t go to plan and the gamble to bring him in didn’t work out in the end after they parted ways with Steven Schumacher.

Shawcross knows the club inside out and is a safe pair of hands for the time being.

The fact the Potters beat Sunderland shows that he managed to get a tune out of the players for that one.

The former defender is currently the Under-21’s coach at the Bet365 Stadium.

Shawcross rose up through the ranks as a player at Manchester United and went on to play two times for the Red Devils’ first-team as a youngster, as well as having a loan spell away from Old Trafford at Royal Antwerp.

Stoke City signed him in 2007 and he went on to make 453 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 25 goals.

The Chester-born man then hung up his boots in 2021 after a stint in America with Inter Miami.

What now?

Shawcross is in line to take Stoke City to Turf Moor to play Burnley in their upcoming fixture.

The club will be weighing up replacements for Pelach behind the scenes.
