Sheffield United are closing in on the signing of Sam McCallum, a report from The Star has said.

Sheffield United are heading back to the Championship and the squad looks set for a revamp.

A busy summer lays ahead of Chris Wilder and co as they look to recover from a dismal 2023/24 season in the Premier League. The backline looks set for a makeover with a number of departures paving the way for fresh signings.

One man linked with the Blades earlier this week was left-back Sam McCallum, whose deal with Norwich City officially expires at the end of this month. Stoke City were also said to be keen.

Now though, The Star reports that Sheffield United are closing in on a swoop for McCallum.

He would be their first addition of the summer window and would mark a real bargain for the Blades on a free transfer. It remains unknown just how far along the pursuit of McCallum is, but things seem to be moving in the right direction for Wilder and co.

Who is this?

A fresh start

McCallum has been with Norwich City for four-and-a-half years now, joining from Coventry City in January 2020.

While the 24-year-old has had runs in the side and enjoyed some promising streaks, the starting spot at left-back has never truly been his. Dimi Giannoulis, who is also departing, has been the go-to man there in recent seasons.

As such, McCallum spent time back on loan at Coventry City and with QPR. He played 34 times for the Canaries last season, but it seems he’s now looking to head for pastures new.

Sheffield United marks a great move for McCallum, assuming it comes off. He’ll be hoping to kick on and maximise his potential at Bramall Lane with regular starts and strong form, though it remains to be seen if and when the move is wrapped up as things progress.

A necessary signing

As Max Lowe and Ben Osborn move on from Sheffield United, the move to bring in another option on the left is a needed one.

Rhys Norrington-Davies is the only option there as it stands, and he has had his fair share of injury problems. As such, strong cover and competition for him is a must.

McCallum can offer just that, and on a free transfer, it could end up being one of the Blades’ shrewder deals of the summer transfer window. Securing his signature amid interest from elsewhere is bound to feel good too.

As a deal moves closer, fans will be keeping a keen eye out for further developments and eventual confirmation of the transfer.
