Sunderland u21s in action against Sheffield United in the Premier League Cup.

Sunderland u21s slipped to a narrow home defeat to Sheffield United in the Premier League Cup — here's how Andy rated the lads!

Kelechi Chibueze: 6/10

The Sheffield United goal was bundled in at his near post and there was not much he could have done about it and that was pretty much their only real shot on target. Was very comfortable in possession, as usual.

Tom Lavery: 6/10

Defended well and got forward on occasion to overlap for Tutierov, with one such instance seeing a perfect cross steered over by Watson.

Ben Crompton: 7/10

Our best defender, won pretty much everything that came his way and also comfortable in possession. Bailed out Mitchell early on after he lost the ball in a dangerous position. Almost got a goal but for the goalkeeper making a great save from his header.

Joe Anderson: 5/10

Actually defended well for most of the game, stepping into tackles and coming away with the ball but a howler for the visitor's goal when he got outmuscled down the left.

Jenson Jones: 6/10

Tidy at the back and showed quick feet when in possession, always looking to send Watson away down the line.

Cuba Mitchell: 6/10

A little sloppy in his passing tonight but did well to screen the back four.

Jaydon Jones: 6/10

Tidy in the middle of the park without ever getting hold of the game, did whip one shot just over the bar in the second half.

Timur Tutierov: 6/10

Worked hard down the right wing, combined well with teammates and put a number of crosses in, had one saved tipped into the side netting.

Harrison Jones (C): 6/10

Good interplay with his teammates and often used a quick feint or drop of the shoulder to get away from defenders but not enough end product. Had one effort pushed over the bar after Isidor set him up near the D.

Tommy Watson: 6/10

Kept at it all night but despite it not being his best game, he still caused all sorts of problems. Put a chance on a plate with a cross for Crompton, who was only denied by a brilliant save and then Watson's counter attack and then cross ended up at the feet of Ogunsuyi whose shot was also brilliantly saved.

Wilson Isidor: 6/10

Worked hard up front and showed flashes of his quality, never had any problems going past defenders and showed some good touches to lay the ball off to teammates. Played one great ball over the top for Harrison Jones to run onto but no real chances himself.

Substitutes

Trey Ogunsuyi: 6/10

Held the ball up well and came really close to scoring but his backheeled effort was well stopped by the goalkeeper.

Jack Whittaker: 6/10

Replaced Mitchell in the middle of the pitch and put in a tidy display.

Man of the Match: Ben Crompton

A typically good performance in the under 21s by Ben Crompton, Always stands out defensively, showing his reading of the game early on to cover for Mitchell after the midfielder gave the ball away, but his footwork and passing for a defender is also good. Almost got on the scoresheet when he got on the end of Watson's cross but was denied by a wonder save.
