"Ooooooh Vito Mannone!" — Sunderland's popular Italian goalie signed a new deal to keep him under contract for at least another couple of years.

Vito Mannone became one of those cult heroes at Sunderland through his passion for the club and some outstanding performances that left a mark on the fans.

The Italian's transfer from Arsenal was a more low-key one, given his sporadic appearances for the Gunners. Sunderland fans were unsure of the role he would have at the club, especially with Kieran Westwood also trying to establish himself.

Without a doubt, Mannone's biggest moment in a Sunderland shirt came in the League Cup semi final against Manchester United in 2014. He managed to save two penalties in the shootout at the end of extra time, helping Sunderland qualify for the final at Wembley against Manchester City.

That moment cemented his place in Sunderland folklore, showcasing his dedication and talent, and earning him a special place in the hearts of the supporters.

On April 22, 2014, Vito Mannone was named Sunderland Supporters' Player of the Year at a special presentation night at the Stadium of Light. On May 29, 2014, he was also named the club's Player of the Year, emphasizing how crucial his influence was on the team.

Mannone's influence waned somewhat in the following season as he was challenged for the number one position by Costel Pantilimon. The 8-0 thrashing against Southampton saw him lose his place in the starting lineup.

However, this setback didn't deter him. He regained his position under Sam Allardyce in the 2015-16 season, with Big Sam choosing him over up-and-coming goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Mannone's performances helped Sunderland perform solidly in the second half of the season and retain their Premier League status.

On this day in 2016, the club released a statement announcing that the Italian had signed a new contract with Sunderland.

Sunderland AFC goalkeeper Vito Mannone has agreed a new contract with the Black Cats.

The Italian shot-stopper has penned a new two-year deal, keeping him on Wearside until 2018.

The 28-year-old initially joined Sunderland from Arsenal in 2013 and has since made 69 appearances.

He earned hero status amongst Sunderland supporters in 2014 when he saved two penalties in a shoot-out at Old Trafford, sending the Black Cats to the Capital One Cup Final.

After signing the new deal, the goalkeeper expressed his delight in securing a new contract with the club. Additionally, he stressed the necessity for the team to kick on from this position and not become so reliant on survival late in the season.

I'm really pleased. I just got back and what a way to start the season.

It was massive (staying up).

We keep repeating ourselves each year but I think now is the time to really kick on. We have a great base, the squad is strong and hopefully there's going to be a few players coming in as well to help.

We just want to get going, get ready, get the pre-season hard work done and then look to the start of the Premier League.

Whilst Mannone was able to keep Jordan Pickford out of the team under Big Sam, he found the task somewhat more challenging under David Moyes for the 2016-17 season where Pickford performed brilliantly in a seriously struggling team.

He made nine appearances in the league during that 2016-17 season before transferring to Reading upon Sunderland's relegation to the Championship.
