"He should just be sold" – Tottenham player praised by Lionel Messi faces ruthless transfer verdict

Tottenham Hotspur face several key decisions ahead of the summer transfer window, particularly regarding players currently out on loan.
One such case is young Argentine striker Alejo Veliz, whose future at the club remains uncertain.
Véliz, currently gaining experience in La Liga with Espanyol, could be offloaded permanently if Spurs receive a suitable offer. Reports indicate that while Tottenham may accept a low initial fee, they would likely insist on including a significant sell-on clause in any potential deal.
Wenham urges Tottenham to sell Alejo Veliz
Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham has suggested that parting ways with Veliz might be the best course of action. He believes the striker would have been better served by a loan move to the Championship rather than Spain.
However, if Véliz is not open to that option, securing a permanent transfer with future financial incentives could be a smart alternative for the Lilywhites.
Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said:
"I think it would make sense to sell Veliz.
"It has never really happened for the striker at Tottenham. I've always thought that if he is going to go out on loan, it needs to be a Championship club. However, for whatever reason, that has never happened.
"And if we're being brutally honest, neither of his loan moves to Spain have worked. I wouldn't mind one more year if he is loaned out to the Championship, but if he doesn't want to do that, he should just be sold.
"River Plate won't be able to offer a lot of money. Therefore, perhaps Daniel Levy could sanction his exit for quite a low initial fee, and include a 50 per cent sell on clause, or something along those lines. That would be a good move for Véliz."
Veliz came in with a big reputation with Lionel Messi himself praising him, comparing him to Luis Suarez. However, since arriving at the club he has struggled to carve out a place in the first team.
In search of regular playing time, he was loaned to Sevilla before securing another temporary move to Espanyol. However, his stint in Spain has been underwhelming.
The 21-year-old has managed just 23 appearances across all competitions in the ongoing campaign, scoring four goals while logging slightly over 1,000 minutes on the pitch. More often than not, he has been used as a substitute, limiting his chances to showcase his abilities.
With Tottenham expected to rely on Dominic Solanke as their main striker next season—and possibly signing Mathys Tel on a permanent deal—Véliz's pathway to regular minutes in North London appears blocked.
Given these circumstances, Spurs must now decide whether to loan Veliz out again or move him on permanently while ensuring they retain a stake in his future success.
