James Maddison has his eyes on trophies with Tottenham

The midfielder accompanied Tottenham head coach at a press conference at the Tokyo National Stadium ahead of tomorrow’s pre-season friendly against Vissel Kobe.

Maddison, who joined Tottenham last summer in a £40million transfer (Sky Sports) from Leicester City following their relegation to the Championship believes it is now time for the club to kick on.

The England international enjoyed an impressive start to last season at his new club, however, an ankle injury sustained in the defeat to Chelsea in November kept him sidelined until January and he struggled to recapture the same form following his return.

Maddison’s omission from the Three Lions squad has seen him be part of Tottenham’s pre-season campaign from the start while some other squad members who played in the knock out rounds of Euro 2024 are yet to return.

The 27-year-old, who won the FA Cup during his time at Leicester believes that having a year’s experience of playing under Postecoglou means that Tottenham must now win silverware rather than being content with a decent season.

Tottenham need more than just a ‘good season’

Maddison is enjoying his time in Japan ahead of tomorrow’s fixture against their J1 League opponents.

He told Football.London: “Really happy to be here. My first time in Japan. We’ve been very well received at the hotel and training and excited to see the stadium and looking forward to the game.

He added: “We need to strive to have more than a good season. We want silverware and we want to make history. We’ve benefited from having a year under the manager and now we can kick on.”

The wait for a piece of competitive silverware has been far too long and Maddison is right to insist that the aim this season has to be to win trophies.

Postecoglou is ambitious and will not settle for second best, that being said, one of his few mistakes last season was the team which he put out for the Carabao Cup defeat to Fulham – this season, we must do better in such competitions.
