TBR Football understands that Eddie Howe has reiterated to the club’s hierarchy that he does not want Martin Dubravka to leave this month.

Howe’s stance comes after Dubravka appeared to wave an emotional goodbye to the Newcastle fans after their midweek win at Arsenal.

However, in the eyes of Eddie Howe, Dubravka’s exit is not as clear cut as some are making out.

Dubravka has agreed terms with Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Shabab, and TBR Football's chief correspondent Graeme Bailey can reveal that Sporting Director Paul Mitchell is keen to free up his wages, which are understood to be over £50,000-a-week and he has pushed ahead with agreeing a deal for him to leave.

However, with number one Nick Pope struggling with fitness – Howe feels the club need Dubravka and will suffer if they lose him.

Eddie Howe doesn’t trust back-up goalkeeper as he pushes for Martin Dubravka stay

Newcastle actually have five goalkeepers, but two of those are veterans in the shape of John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie whilst there is also Greek international Odysseas Vlachodimos who arrived from Nottingham Forest in the summer, but we understand club staff are also not convinced he is at the level to play.

Howe spoke about Dubravka at his weekly press conference on Friday: “Martin has never said he wants to leave. He’s been a very, very good professional for us. It’s difficult when Nick is playing and Martin isn’t. He had to stay ready.

“He’s performed well and that’s down to his training levels. Whatever the weather, he’s there. You can see what Newcastle means to him emotionally. All these things will be playing a part for him.

“I think it will help [Newcastle and Martin playing well]. The team is in a good moment and he’s in a good moment. He knows he’s a part of that. The main focus is on Martin’s future. We need to clear that up with just six months left on his contract.

“I’m not totally up to date [with contract situation] with everything so I don’t want to tell you any lies but talks are ongoing.”

Martin Dubravka wants first-team football

While Eddie Howe confirms that Dubravka has not actually asked to leave, it is known that Dubravka wants to play regularly.

Indeed, going back to April of 2024, there were reports of Dubravka being keen to leave Newcastle in search of first-team football.

A lot could depend on Newcastle and their interest in Burnley’s James Trafford. Reports have suggested Trafford is keen for Newcastle to make an offer.

However, as of yet, there’s been nothing concrete for the England under-21 stopper.
