Manchester City have now lost nine of their last 12 games after being beaten 2-1 at Aston Villa in Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off.

The Citizens fell behind in the 16th minute as Jhon Duran fired past Stefan Ortega after great work from Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans.

And Rogers, who spent two years at Manchester City without making a senior appearance, sealed victory for Aston Villa with a fine low finish on 65 minutes.

Phil Foden netted for the visitors in second-half injury time, but it proved nothing more of a consolation.

To make things worse for Man City, the Villa player who caused them the most damage was a player who was on their books but that they moved on.

And Citizens fans had plenty to say about both Rogers and Man City’s decision to move him on.

Manchester City fans bemoan decision to sell Morgan Rogers as Aston Villa star shines

Man City fans couldn’t help but sing Rogers’ praises while also bemoaning the decision to move him – and other top talents like Cole Palmer – on.

“I genuinely cannot believe Morgan Rogers,” wrote one fan. “This kid is absolutely unbelievable and a genuine genuine special player in a modern game of tactical robots.”

Another claimed that “Rogers is better than all our players” and one wrote “Lavia, Palmer, Rogers and many more – that's on you Mister Guardiola.”

Meanwhile, one said: “As a City fan I never understood why we splashed £100million on Jack Grealish who's a mid-table player and got rid of our own youth stars that are 10 times the player he is.

“Maybe balancing the books but then again all those signings it's just ignorance one after the other.”

Another fan wrote: “Morgan Rogers was also an a academy graduate, he was toying with the defence today.”

One added: “Today's goalscorers: Jhon – The one we should buy, Rogers- The one we shouldn't have sold, Foden- The one that cannot be sold.”

Rogers media ratings v Man City

The Birmingham Mail gave Rogers a 9 out of 10 and wrote: “Rogers recorded his third assist of the season and his first since making two in the win over Wolves back in September.

“He showed courage on the ball and powered beyond City markers to get Villa up the pitch.”

Meanwhile, Squawka wrote: “Morgan Rogers scored and assisted in the same Premier League game for the first time in his career, and what a team to do it against.

“The Englishman was in good form against his former club. He started the move for his goal from just outside the Villa box and beat Ortega with a good finish.

“It was a standout performance for Rogers, who had five penalty area entries, one big chance created and three take-ons completed to go with his goal and assist.”
