Argentina beats Colombia in extra time to win record 16th Copa America

Argentina stands alone.

The Albiceleste defended their Copa America title Sunday, defeating Colombia 1-0 in extra time after a frenetic final. Lautaro Martinez, the leading scorer in the competition, delivered the decisive strike in the 112th minute that gave Argentina its record 16th Copa America triumph.

Lionel Scaloni's team has now won three consecutive major tournaments, sandwiching the 2022 World Cup between back-to-back successful Copa campaigns.

Colombia, meanwhile, was seeking its second continental crown.

Argentina claimed the win despite losing captain Lionel Messi to injury midway through the second half.

More to come.
