Korir: McCarthy rumours wide of the mark

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) acting Chief Executive Officer Patrick Korir has played down reports that Benni McCarthy is set to become the new head coach of the national team.

The FKF is currently on the lookout for a new man at the helm after Engin Firat tendered his resignation on December 12 due to arrears with his salary and McCarthy was reportedly identified as his replacement.

The Bafana Bafana legend has expressed a desire to get back in the dugout after leaving Manchester United at the end of his contract in July and revealed earlier this month that he’d been interviewed by three unnamed Major Soccer League (MLS) clubs.

However, McCarthy was surprisingly linked with the Kenya job last week and it had been speculated that newly-elected FKF president Hussein Mohammed saw the former Red Devils coach as the ideal man to take the Harambee Stars forward.

Korir, though, insists the claims are wide of the mark, stating that the 47-year-old has applied for the vacant role, but no decision has been made on who will succeed Firat.

“We have received many CVs, close to 20, from candidates who want to coach the Kenyan national team,” Korir told Al-Qahera News.

“Benni McCarthy is one of the coaches who applied for the job through his agent, and the technical committee is still studying them.

“The technical committee is looking for the best person suitable for the vacant position. This is entirely up to them. I will wait until they reach my office with their preferred candidate, once the process is completed.”
