Cape Town City edge Kaizer Chiefs for only win of the weekend

A truncated weekend of Betway Premiership action saw four of five matches end in draws, with only Cape Town City able to celebrate a victory.
The Citizens trumped Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at the DHL Cape Town Stadium on Sunday evening thanks to a strike early in the second half from Darwin Gonzalez.
The result saw City – in their first match under returning 'new' coach Muhsin Ertugral – move up to 11th place on the log, and keep up their excellent recent record against Chiefs: the Citizens are now unbeaten in their last eight league matches (W6 D2) against the Soweto side.
As for the Amakhosi, this fourth league defeat of the season leaves them in seventh spot (just one point ahead of City) and they continue to search in vain for consistency.
The early match on Sunday at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium saw Limpopo rivals Polokwane City and Sekhukhune United draw 1-1: Rise and Shine claimed the lead via Raymond Daniels, but Babina Noko hit back just before the interval via Tresor Yamba for a share of the spoils.
Saturday featured – if one could use that word – three goalless stalemates: between Marumo Gallants and Richards Bay at the Dr Molemela Stadium; AmaZulu FC and Golden Arrows in a Durban derby at the Moses Mabhida Stadium; and TS Galaxy and Magesi FC at the Mbombela Stadium.
Of the three 0-0 draws, Magesi can take the most out of theirs, with the result breaking a run of five successive losses across all competitions. Dikwena tsa Meetse remain bottom of the log, but have moved to within one point of the relegation playoff berth (15th), currently occupied by Royal AM.
The Betway Premiership will continue on Wednesday 8 January with three matches: Cape Town City v Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs v Stellenbosch FC and AmaZulu FC v Sekhukhune United.
