Mambas targeting third straight win in Group G

Mozambique will be looking to keep the pressure on Group G leaders Algeria when they host Uganda in a 2026 World Cup qualifier at the Cairo International Stadium in Egypt on Thursday, March 20.

Kick-off is at 3pm CAT (SA, GMT+2)

The Mambas have made an impressive start to their qualifying campaign, winning three of their opening four matches to emerge as the Fennec Foxes’ main challengers in the group.

Chiquinho Conde’s side registered back-to-back wins against Somalia (2-1) and Guinea (1-0) in June 2024 as they bounced back from their first defeat in the qualifiers to the Algerians (2-0) on 19 November 2023.

The Southeast Africans needed a late goal from Geny Catamo (90+3′ PEN) to claim all three points against the National Elephants on 10 June 2024 which kept them level on nine points with Algeria in second place.

Meanwhile, Uganda will be targeting an upset in the Egyptian capital to boost their hopes of finishing in the top two and booking their ticket to the global showpiece for the first time.

The Cranes aren’t out of the picture by any means despite sitting fifth in the group with a record of two wins and two losses.

Paul Put’s side almost pulled off a shock result against the Fennec Foxes on 10 June 2024 after Travis Mutyaba opened the scoring in the 10th minute, but second-half goals from Houssem Aouar (46′) and Said Benrahma (58′) meant they came away from Kampala with nothing to show for their efforts.

The East Africans are in a three-way tie with Botswana (3rd) and Guinea (4th) on six points, and victory in Cairo would take them level with Mozambique, while even a draw wouldn’t be the end of the world.
