Bobby Madley has tonight's whistle

Tonight’s game against Plymouth will be refereed by Bobby Madley for whom it will be a sixteenth Burnley game, the first of which was back in November 2011 and a 2-1 defeat at Birmingham.

Six of those games have come in the Championship, six in the Premier League along with one FA Cup tie and two in the League Cup. He's certainly had his moments in those games. He sent off Kieran Trippier, wrongly, in a home defeat against Chalton and Keith Treacy, correctly in the League Cup tie against West Ham in the following season.

His performances overall have given him a RATE THE REF rating of 62.76 out of a hundred which sees him in seventh place in the current table.

He's been back refereeing since his enforced absence for four years, kicking off with a League Two game between Morecambe and Port Vale in October 2020 and had to wait almost two years before getting a game in the Championship. He did get a Premier League game in October two years ago, prompting a return to the Select Group, but he's not refereed there since and is very much a Championship referee in Select Group 2.

For some reason, he's been credited with refereeing our game at Oxford in the media but that was definitely not the case. He has refereed four Championship games this season and one in the League Cup in which there have been fifteen yellow cards, nine of those to home team players and six to away team players.

His last game was the League Cup tie between Preston and Fulham that ended 1-1 before Preston went on to win the penalty shoot-out 16-15. The only player yellow carded in the game was Fulham's Issa Diop.

The fourth official tonight is Josh Smith; he's already refereed us this season at Wolves in the League Cup.
