Nottingham Forest tried to sign a number of players in the summer of 2023 as Steve Cooper bid to improve as a head coach and ultimately establish in the Premier League.

Forest did have a less chaotic transfer window from 12 months previous during the summer of 2022. However, there were still some strange signings with Odysseas Vlachodimos, Divock Origi and Nuno Tavares all proving strange additions.

The permanent additions that Forest made were largely impressive though – and certainly provided a step in the right direction. Callum Hudson-Odoi, Anthony Elanga and Murillo proved the pick of the bunch, with Ola Aina a sound freebie.

Cooper was left disappointed in some senses though. A number of targets weren’t completed with players yet to be convinced by Forest as a Premier League outfit back in 2023.

Chelsea star who rejected Forest now valued at £40m

Trevoh Chalobah was a target for Forest on two occasions. On both occasions he opted to stay put at Stamford Bridge, citing a desire to play in European competition should he leave Chelsea.

With that in mind, it made an intriguing piece of transfer news in the summer when he chose to sign for Crystal Palace on loan where he’s spent the first half of the 2024/25 campaign.

Now, Chalobah has been recalled by Chelsea and it would appear that he’s valued at £40 million, according to The Sun, with the Blues keen to cash in before the window closes.

That fee will almost certainly price Palace out and it remains to be seen where the 25-year-old ends up moving, with the report suggesting he earns £7 million per year as well.

Forest wise to avoid Chalobah signing

This would have been a bad piece of business from Forest’s perspective. Chalobah played in a 1-0 defeat for Palace against Forest earlier in the season and he didn’t look up to much.

The central defender played 14 times for the Eagles in the first half of the season. Palace have picked up of late but it’s fair to say that Forest have moved on from Chalobah in recent windows.

Nikola Milenkovic is far better than the Chelsea man and he only cost the club £12 million in the summer. Murillo was a £10.6 million signing and he looks to be worth around £70 million right now.

Chalobah fit the profile of a Cooper signing down to the ground and he’d worked with him previously with the England youth setup. However, the club got a lucky escape with the defender turning Forest down and it’s hard to imagine anyone paying £40 million for him.
