Sessegnon: 'It's an amazing feeling'

Ryan Sessegnon said sealing Fulham’s fabulous victory over Tottenham Hotspur by scoring the decisive second goal against his former employers was ‘an amazing feeling’.
Sessegnon, who spent five injury-hit years at Spurs following Fulham’s relegation from the top flight in 2019, returned to Craven Cottage on a free transfer this summer. The 24 year-old scored the first goal of his second spell with the Whites at Wolverhampton Wanderers last month, but there was something very special about the way he secured a precious three points for Marco Silva’s side with a superb right-footed finish at the Hammersmith End.
A beaming Sessegnon told FFCTV after the final whistle:
“Initially, when the ball went [forward], I was thinking I might leave it, but then I thought let me gamble on it and run in behind. I managed to get my body there, he kind of let the ball bounce. I shrugged him off a little bit, tried to get on my right foot because he was on the other side of me and I took a swing at it – and it went in!
The noise was incredible when the ball hit the net. I’ve been waiting for that moment to happen, I’m so happy that it happened today in an important game for us. I knew when I came on today, if there was anything loose ball or any chance that I could get, I wanted to make sure that I took that chance and I did. It’s hard to describe this feeling – it’s amazing.”
Despite the significance of his first goal at the Hammersmith End since the strike that levelled the Championship play-off semi-final against Derby County seven years ago, Sessegnon’s muted celebration showed respect for Spurs, whose travelling contingent had given him a warm reception just a minute earlier.
“I spent five seasons there. I still have a lot of respect for the club and the people that work for the club. That’s why there was no celebration. The fans didn’t get to see me a lot with the injuries that I had there. They knew what I could do, but they didn’t get to see it on a consistent basis.”
Speaking to Match of the Day, Sessegnon insisted that Fulham are definitely in the race for Europe.
“It puts us right up there for the European spots, and it’s nice to get a goal as well. I was told to bring energy on the left-hand side. I was told to keep it tight but at the same time keep that threat going forward too. As a team we have one eye [on the European qualification positions] and we’re taking it game by game, we just need to keep going.”
