Brennan Johnson’s rich vein of form continued as he scored a late winner to spearhead Tottenham Hotspur to a 2-1 UEFA Europa League win against Ferencvaros.

The Welsh international has now scored in five successive games across all competitions and is riding on a high after an underwhelming start to the season.

Johnson was slated by fans and pundits for his lack of end product and even had to delete his Instagram account after being subjected to a lot of abuse and criticism.

However, in a matter of weeks, things are now looking good for the winger, who has quickly emerged as Tottenham’s top scorer this season.

Amid his rich vein of form, Paul Merson believes he looks like a totally different player now than what was the case at the start of the season.

Tottenham played good football at the start of the season but didn’t get their dues as they were wasteful in attack.

However, in recent weeks, they have more than just turned a corner as most of their key players have shown signs of returning to their best.

Merson believes Johnson – along with Dominic Solanke and James Maddison – have transformed themselves in recent weeks as they continue to deliver the goods for Ange Postecoglou.

“Dominic Solanke is slowly starting to find some form,” wrote Merson in his column for Sportskeeda.

“The same goes for a lot of the other players, especially Brennan Johnson. Not too long ago, Johnson looked like a fish up a tree.

“Take a look at him now! It’s the same with James Maddison, he looks a different player compared to a few weeks back.”

Brennan Johnson’s Tottenham career so far

Signed for a fee believed to be in the region of £47.5m from Nottingham Forest last summer, Johnson scored just five Premier League goals for his new club during the 2023-24 campaign.

However, he notched up ten assists, making his tally of 15 goal involvements a decent return for a young player in his first season at a big club.

Johnson started the 2024-25 campaign poorly but has sprung into life in recent weeks.

He will look to sign off on a high by getting his name on the scoresheet against Brighton & Hove Albion before going away on international duty with Wales.
