Alan Shearer believes he would ‘absolutely’ make the current England squad in his prime.

The former striker did not hesitate when asked about his chances of displacing either Harry Kane or Dominic Solanke.

Thomas Tuchel included the pair as his two strikers in his first Three Lions squad on Friday.

The German will begin his tenure this week against Albania before facing Latvia on Monday.

On the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer, Gary Lineker and Micah Richards were asked if they would get into the team in their prime.

The Newcastle legend immediately replied: “Yeah course I'm getting into that team. Absolutely.”

Shearer is seventh on England’s all-time top scorers list, with his 30 goals in 63 caps putting him level with Nat Lofthouse and Tom Finney.

He also remains the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer with 260 goals across 441 appearances for Blackburn and Newcastle.

However, Tuchel already has the Three Lions’ record scorer available to him in Kane.

The Bayern Munich striker holds the distinction thanks to his 69 goals in 103 caps and has also netted 32 times for the German giants this term.

Meanwhile, Solanke is yet to score in three substitute appearances for his country.

Lineker also backed himself to make the team, simply responding: “100 per cent.”

The 1986 World Cup golden boot winner is England’s fourth highest scorer of all-time behind Kane, Wayne Rooney and Sir Bobby Charlton.

In 80 caps between 1984 and 1992, Lineker scored 48 international goals.

Richards was less confident of his chances, though, initially asking: “Who am I up against?”

Once Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, Reece James and Kieran Trippier had been listed as his competition he exclaimed: “Not a chance.”

The retired right-back’s response left his co-hosts in hysterics before he continued: “Not even in my prime. Trent and Kyle Walker not a chance.

“Maybe Kyle Walker at Spurs, but not when he came to Man City he's a different beast now.”

As a player, Richards won 13 caps after making his debut as an 18-year-old under Steve McClaren in 2006.

He also scored once for the Three Lions in a 3-0 win over Israel in September 2007.
