Arsenal fans have taken to social media calling for the club to terminate Raheem Sterling's loan deal following the news of his injury.

The 30-year-old winger was absent from the squad for Arsenal's 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday (21 December).

Since he featured in the Carabao Cup quarter-final win just days earlier, there was speculation about whether his absence was injury-related or due to performance concerns.

On 23 December, Mikel Arteta clarified that the former Man City star is dealing with a “knee issue” and will be sidelined [via James Olley].

This injury comes at a particularly unfortunate time for the Chelsea loanee, as Bukayo Saka is also out. With Arsenal's star winger unavailable, Sterling had a prime opportunity to prove his determination to remain in North London beyond his loan.

Football Insider opinion

Fans have previously expressed frustration with Sterling's performances and are now questioning whether his loan spell has been worthwhile, especially during this crucial festive period.

His only goal for the club came in a League Cup win against League One side Bolton Wanderers, and he has made just six appearances in the Premier League.

At times, Sterling has linked well with 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, even providing two assists, but his performances have not met the standard expected of a club competing for titles and trophies.

Arteta admitted it has been "difficult" to give the England international more minutes due to injuries across the squad [Daily Mail]. However, he suggested that many substitutions and lineup changes have been dictated by circumstances beyond his control.

Fans, however, have not been as understanding.

While the injury is also beyond Sterling's control, frustration has mounted because he was brought in as a backup for Saka, and his limited minutes, combined with this setback, have made his loan spell appear even less productive.

One fan called his loan spell a "waste of time" while another urged the club to "cancel his loan" and instead bring in a "long-term backup to Saka”.

Others took a more measured approach, with one fan commenting that Sterling was simply "unlucky" as this was finally meant to be "his opportunity”.

In other news, Arsenal fans are outraged by Les Ferdinand’s comments over Saka.
