It's hard to pull any positives from Manchester United's season so far.

Of course, this isn't the first time we've seen Manchester United play poorly, but usually, there's at least one positive to take away.

In that first post-Fergie season under David Moyes, it was Adnan Januzaj, in Louis van Gaal's final season at the club it was Marcus Rashford, and last season it was the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo.

However, while Mainoo enjoyed a breakout campaign last term, he seems to have taken something of a step backwards this season, and speaking on BBC 606, Robbie Savage has been critical of the young midfielder.

Indeed, Savage says that Mainoo isn't immune from criticism and while he thinks he is a fantastic player, he's been as poor as everyone else this season.

Kobbie Mainoo has been poor this season

Savage shared a scathing verdict on Mainoo's performances this season.

"Again, Kobbie Mainoo, he's not beyond criticism. I know he's young and he's done unbelievably well. He's a fantastic player who will probably go on to become one of Manchester United's biggest legends, but he's been as poor as the rest and he has good experience now in big tournaments," Savage said.

Kobbie Mainoo is struggling

Savage is right, Kobbie Mainoo is struggling so far this season, and he's not the only one in this United team suffering from poor fortune and form.

Mainoo is a fantastic player, but confidence is absolutely massive in football and after a slow start to the season, Mainoo doesn't look as confident as he has in the past.

Mainoo has the ability to be a true Manchester United superstar, but something needs to change at Old Trafford if he's to rediscover his best form.

Let's hope Mainoo can get back to his best soon, because when he's in his groove and playing his natural game he's an absolute joy to watch.

Whether or not Mainoo can rediscover his best form under Erik ten Hag remains to be seen, but with pressure piling on the Manchester United manager, Mainoo may soon be working under a new coach.
