Barry Bannan incident: Hackett appalled by Sheffield Wednesday v Stoke officials

Barry Bannan should have given away a penalty for Sheffield Wednesday against Stoke City, a stunned Keith Hackett has said.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official was shocked that the incident in question was not spotted by the match officials.
Danny Rohl’s side claimed an impressive 2-0 win over Stoke at Hillsborough on Saturday (21 December) despite going down to ten men when Di’Shon Bernard was sent off for two yellow cards before half-time.
Sheffield Wednesday still took the lead through Josh Windass seven minutes into the secnd-half, before Callum Paterson struck to seal the win with 76 minutes on the clock.
That gave the Owls a further boost after they managed to hold off interest from Southampton in manager Rohl earlier this week.
Things though might have been quite different had referee Sam Allison spotted an offence from Bannan inside his own area just moments before the second goal.
Stoke City denied ‘clear penalty’ against Sheffield Wednesday
With 71 minutes gone, substitute Lynden Gooch fired an effort from the left-hand side into the home side’s penalty box where Bannan was positioned.
Leaping through the area to defend the cross, the Sheffield Wednesday captain clearly blocked the ball with his hand, taking any pace of the delivery, allowing it to run safely to keeper James Beadle, who did save another penalty in the game.
That was not spotted by the officials who chose not to award a penalty to Stoke that could have changed the course of the game, leaving Hackett stunned.
Speaking to Football Insider about the incident the former referee said:
“Stoke should have had a penalty kick when Wednesday’s Barry Bannan handles inside his own penalty area.
“How has this not been seen? It’s a clear penalty kick missed by the match officials.”
Following that win, Sheffield Wednesday are now ninth in the Championship table just three points adrift of the play-off places.
Stoke meanwhile are 19th and just four points clear of the relegation zone having struggled for form since replacing Steven Schumacher with Narcis Pelach as head coach back in September.
In other news, a Championship manager has been told he is getting “sacked in the morning” after his side’s latest defeat.
