Manchester United salvaged a late draw in a rollercoaster Europa League clash against Porto that exasperated everyone connected with the Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag’s charges raced into a two-goal lead early on in Thursday night’s encounter at the Estado do Dragao.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for Man United after just seven minutes, before Rasmus Hojlund doubled the Red Devils’ lead in the 20th minute.

However, Man United then conceded seven minutes later as Pepe got a goal back for the hosts, before Samu Omorodion drew Porto level in the 34th minute.

Omorodion then struck early on in the second half to stun the Man United contingent, and things got even worse when Bruno Fernandes was sent off – once again – nine minutes from time.

However, Ten Hag was bailed out by Harry Maguire, who came off the Red Devils bench to head in an equaliser in the 91st minute of the game.

Although a draw isn’t a terrible result for Man United, the way the game panned out – not to mention Fernandes’ second sending-off in two consecutive matches – was a bitter pill to swallow.

Old Trafford cult hero Owen Hargreaves did not pull any punches when it came to his post-match assessment.

Owen Hargreaves slams ‘ridiculous’ Manchester United defence at Porto

Hargreaves, speaking on TNT Sports, admitted there was a “lot going on” and bemoaned how weak Man United were defensively and how poorly they did at crosses.

The former midfielder also said it was “ridiculous” how the Red Devils spurned a two-goal lead to go 3-2 down, before saying this state of affairs has been the norm for some years now.

“There was a lot going on,” said Hargreaves, as transcribed by BBC Sport. “There were so many holes defensively.

“Manchester United didn’t stop any crosses, and then to go 3-2 down after being 2-0 up was ridiculous.

“The middle part of the game was crazy. That’s what it’s been like for a couple of years.”
