Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell is attracting interest from multiple Premier League clubs ahead of the January transfer window.
That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 28-year-old will “definitely” leave Stamford Bridge in January.
This comes after Enzo Maresca admitted that Chilwell is one of a number of players who have been on the fringes of his squad and are keen to move on next month.
The former England international has made just one appearance so far this season after being excluded from Maresca’s Premier League and Conference League plans.
As a result, clubs are lining up to provide him with a way out of his Stamford Bridge nightmare and give him the chance to play regular first-team football.
His experience both in the top tier of English football and on the international stage are viewed as valuable assets, while he is still a reasonable age.
Chilwell signed a new contract at Stamford Bridge last year to keep him at the club until 2027, but that time is set to be cut short in January.
Ben Chilwell ‘definitely’ leaving Chelsea in January after transfer twist
Multiple clubs are believed to be keen on signing a new left-back in January, and Chilwell’s availability has placed them on alert ahead of the window opening.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in player recruitment at the top level after spending over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that the defender is still highly rated after his performances for England in the past.
“He’ll definitely be leaving Chelsea in January from what I’ve heard,” he told Football Insider.
“It was a surprise to me that he was pushed aside there because I rate him quite highly, and I know a lot of other clubs do as well.
“He’s a modern-day full-back who is always willing to get forward, but there were some concerns about the injuries he’s had in the last couple of years.
“Now, clubs are crying out for a new left-back, and his availability has put them on alert.
“He has to be fit and playing, and there’s a lot of interest in him because of how highly-rated he was while he was playing for England.
“There is a belief at some clubs that he could be a major asset if he can show that sort of form again.
“He’s got a lot of experience at the top level as well which can be valuable, and he’s only 28 as well.
“So I’m hearing there are a lot of clubs interested in that move.”
