'He can't finish': Pundit says £15m Tottenham player's technique simply isn't good enough

Tottenham Hotspur have been incredibly frustrating to watch this season.

Spurs sit in mid-table in the Premier League, but there's a feeling that this team should be achieving so much more.

Ange Postecoglou's side have often been let down by individual errors and a lack of cutting edge in the final third, and a number of players need to improve.

Glenn Hoddle has recently criticised both Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie for their recent form, and they’re not the only Tottenham players to come under fire.

Indeed, speaking on the Gab and Juls Show, Don Hutchison has now critiqued Timo Werner's form for Spurs.

Don Hutchison criticises Tottenham’s Timo Werner

Hutchison discussed Werner and his recent performances.

Werner has come into the Spurs side as of late after an injury to Heung-Min Son left a gaping hole down the left flank.

Hutchison says that he does like Werner as a player, but he thinks that his technique isn't good enough and that he's proven he can't finish.

"I don't want to be unkind on Timo Werner, but you sort of can't help it, because you want him to succeed," Hutchison said.

"He's not a bad player, he's got loads of strengths, in that Man United game he could've scored three or four. There was one moment in that game that summed him up, he ran 50 yards and all he had to do was find a Spurs player, he missed them both and found a Man United player.

"It's a technique thing, at his age he won't find the goals because he's proven that he can't finish, but he stretches games, that's why Spurs signed him."

Werner's finishing has been compared to Harry Kane's

Werner's goalscoring record in recent years does suggest that his finishing is a problem, but, interestingly, once upon a time, the German was a reliable goalscorer.

He once hit 28 league goals in a season for RB Leipzig, while Ben Chilwell compared Werner’s finishing to Harry Kane's during his time at Chelsea.

"He has similar characteristics to both Vards and Harry to be fair,' Chilwell said.

"In terms of running the channels and how quick he is it's similar to Vards.

"With Harry his link-up play and his finishing is similar. He's definitely in a category with them two."

During his time at Leipzig, Werner was a great finisher, but now, he can't hit a barn door. So, what's changed?

As ever in football, the answer may simply be confidence, Werner looks like he seriously lacks belief in front of goal right now, and that's affecting his ability to put the ball in the net.

Whether or not Werner will be able to rediscover that goalscoring touch he once had at RB Leipzig remains to be seen.
