Newcastle United had a very disappointing summer transfer window.

The Magpies failed to make any major senior signings, but it wasn't for a lack of trying.

Marc Guehi to Newcastle was one of the transfer stories of the summer.

Newcastle bid for Guehi on multiple occasions, and the Tyneside club are still said to be interested in Guehi.

Newcastle actually bid £60m for Guehi in the summer.

A deal did look like it was on the cards over the summer, and according to The Mail's Sami Mokbel, at one point, it looked like a deal would be done.

Indeed, speaking on the Fully Loaded Transfer Show, Mokbel claimed that at the beginning of the summer he was sure this deal would happen, so much so that he would've been willing to put his house on it.

Marc Guehi to Newcastle looked incredibly likely

Mokbel shared just how confident he was about this deal happening.

The journalist says that he was absolutely certain that Guehi was headed to Newcastle, claiming that he would've staked his house on this transfer happening.

"At the start of the summer I would have put my house on that deal happening. I really would have. I remember vividly, I got back from the Euros, there were a couple of clubs who wanted Marc and one of them was Newcastle," Mokbel said.

"We'd gone on holiday to Mexico when I got back, and I started getting texts and I knew it was right and I knew one of the clubs was 100% Newcastle at the time.

"Palace knew that it was just Newcastle and also they knew that Eddie had told Paul Mitchell it was Marc Guehi or bust."

Could Newcastle still sign Guehi?

Newcastle may have failed in their pursuit of Guehi this summer, but, luckily, the January transfer window is just around the corner.

So, could Newcastle go back in for Guehi?

Craig Hope has claimed that a January deal for Guehi is possible, but Mokbel wasn't quite as confident later in this show.

"I think if Newcastle were to go back in in January, I don't think that is beyond the realms of possibility, the only way I see clubs making offers for Guehi in January would be for injury reasons.

"I think it is more likely now that the next set of offers for Marc won't come in January because the top clubs don't need centre-backs at the moment, not come January."

Of course, as Newcastle have shown in recent years, absolutely anything is possible in a transfer window when you're the richest club in the world, and Eddie Howe is clearly still a fan of this player.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on in the coming months.
