'Instead of what we have': Paul Scholes admits he wanted Manchester United to sign thriving Tottenham star

As Old Trafford illustrates time and time again, it never rains for Manchester United but pours.

On Sunday, Erik ten Hag watched his ten-men of Manchester United crumble to a 3-0 defeat to Tottenham without showing any real fight or quality.

From Jose Mourinho to the current man in the firing line, it seems to be that the same old story keeps repeating itself.

Bruno Fernandes’ red card did make matters worse for the home team, but Tottenham were already all over their opponents and causing them no end of problems.

Brennan Johnson opened the scoring after an outrageous run and assist from Micky van de Ven, with Dejan Kulusevski then scoring within minutes of the restart.

After past criticisms, Dominic Solanke has now found that spark and can’t stop scoring because he netted his side’s third – he has now scored in three consecutive matches.

Tottenham’s club-record transfer would have been gutted that he didn’t score more because he did miss a glorious one-v-one chance at the end.

Meanwhile, Manchester United fans and Paul Scholes watched Joshua Zirkzee display that he isn’t a number nine.

The legendary midfielder doesn’t think any of his former side’s forward options will come good, including Rasmus Hojlund, who showed promise last season and is now coming back from an injury.

That’s why Scholes stated that ‘I wouldn’t mind having Solanke up front’ for Manchester United, but instead, Tottenham put down the money for him, as he told Premier League Productions (29/09/24 at 1:30 pm).

Paul Scholes wanted Dominic Solanke at Manchester United

"I just think other teams have more (up top than Manchester United), especially the teams at the top end of the league," said Scholes.

"Even Tottenham, you look at Solanke going for as much as he did. I think 'I wouldn't mind having Solanke up front for us instead of what we have actually got'.

"I don't think they have addressed that centre forward area of the pitch. They are trying to do it with bits and bobs. Taking gambles really with young players. I am not sure they will come good."

Dominic Solanke and Ivan Toney summer transfers

One of the main talking points of the summer transfer window was Ivan Toney and which Premier League club he would end up at.

It was well-documented that he was going to leave Brentford, it was just a case of a team higher up putting down the money for his goalscoring talents.

Spurs opted for Solanke and Manchester United didn’t seemingly look towards that direction, and in the end, Toney ended up in Saudi Arabia.

Not just Solanke, but Toney is another player that was available on the market for Manchester United to bring in.
