Everton's former chief Keith Wyness has claimed a new £15million cash injection from Newcastle owners PIF (Saudi Public Investment Fund) could make up the club’s January transfer budget.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Magpies could boost that figure by selling the likes of Sean Longstaff before the deadline if they have new incomings in mind.
Football Insider revealed last week (10 January) that Newcastle owners PIF have injected £15m into the club in the form of a new share issue.
A Companies House submission published on 9 January, backdated to 31 December, revealed £15million was paid into the club for one new allotted share.
The Magpies have struggled to meet the Premier League’s PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) since the Saudi-backed takeover but were cleared for the 2023-24 campaign on Tuesday (14 January).
Eddie Howe’s side are yet to make their first move of the winter transfer window, which slams shut on 3 February.
Newcastle have £15m January budget after new share issue, says Wyness
Reacting to the new share issue, Wyness told Football Insider's Insider Track podcast: "This is just housekeeping again for Newcastle.
"Where they could, PIF have put money in to try and alleviate the PSR issues.
"By my calculations, Newcastle are tight – but they'll be able to trade.
"This £15m has come up as an opportunity to put some cash in, and that could be the sort of money we're talking about in terms of a January budget.
“That’s in addition to any money they bring in from perhaps selling the likes of Longstaff.
"That's basically what I'm seeing from that new cash injection."
