Kylian Mbappe has admitted following Cristiano Ronaldo’s footsteps at Real Madrid will be impossible.

Mbappe signed for Real Madrid this summer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, ending seven years in the French capital.

The 25-year-old will join a star-studded side including Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr, though he will be expected to headline the act at the Bernabeu – much like Ronaldo.

The Portuguese superstar is Real Madrid’s all-time highest goalscorer with 450 goals in 438 appearances, winning four Champions League titles and four Ballon d’Or awards during his nine years there.

Many Madrid fans are hoping Mbappe can replicate Ronaldo’s success at Real but the Frenchman has downplayed any chance of filling the 39-year-old’s boots.

“There will never be another Cristiano Ronaldo,” said Mbappe.

“He has shaped football, inspired generations, scored goals and won cups. He has known how to reinvent himself. He is one of a kind.

“Me, I am following my own path. My dream to play for Real Madrid is becoming reality.

“I hope to make my mark on football and be one of a kind at Real Madrid, but I am not writing the next chapter of his story.

“I have total respect for him. I can only sing his praises.

“Over time been lucky to brush shoulders with him, meet him and get to know him. We are still in contact. He keeps up with my life, gives me tips.

“Playing against him is always an honour. Regardless of what happens after he will be a football legend.

“Of course, we hope he is not so happy, and we are going to reach the semi-final.”

France and Portugal do battle at Euro 2024 on Friday with a chance to reach the semi-final, which will see Ronaldo and Mbappe face off against each other.

Neither have particularly lit up the tournament this summer in Germany with Mbappe scoring one penalty while Ronaldo has failed to even do that.

Nevertheless, both superstars are capable of making the difference in big-pressure moments and France boss Didier Deschamps has admitted he will keep his eye on Portugal’s illustrious forward.

“He has the ability not just the motivation within him he is looking for the win,” he said.

“He can score goals and be decisive. Even though a little older, he is still a highly competitive player.”
