Enzo Maresca's Chelsea side tasted defeat in the Premier League against Liverpool for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.

Chelsea hadn't lost in the league since Maresca and Cole Palmer were reunited with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on matchday one.

That being said, Chelsea gave a good account of themselves at Anfield, especially in the early stages.

Maresca's side were dominating the ball and creating chances, only to then be undone by one or two lapse moments at the back.

Levi Colwill was guilty of a clumsy tackle on Curtis Jones which led to Liverpool's first penalty, a decision that VAR didn't overturn.

Alan Shearer was shocked that VAR intervened to rule that Robert Sanchez then didn't foul Jones later in the half, a decision that divided opinion.

That being said, Chelsea still had chances to leave Merseyside with at least a point, regardless of any VAR decisions.

However, things didn't quite click for Palmer at Anfield, who is usually central to everything good Chelsea produce.

It was a rare off day for Palmer, who was kept quiet for most of the game, snatching at any chances that came his way.

That being said, Noni Madueke was furious with Palmer late in the second half.

In the 71st minute, as seen during Sky Sports' broadcast of the game, Madueke was livid with his £40m teammate for choosing to shoot instead of passing the ball out wide.

Palmer was fairly close to goal and chose to shoot – a decision Gary Neville backed when commentating on the game live.

But Madueke looked seriously frustrated in acres of space to Palmer's right, throwing his arms in the air.

Noni Madueke one of several Chelsea players who need to improve

In truth, very few Chelsea fans would have blamed Palmer for shooting, a player who has been so instrumental for them this season.

But perhaps it was a sign of how the England international's game was going that he chose to ignore Madueke, determined to make a statement himself.

Of course, Chelsea will still take positives from the defeat, they're certainly a team who are on the right track.

Madueke himself endured a fairly disappointing game, and he'll also be determined to improve in Chelsea's upcoming league fixtures.
